What Is The Montgomery GI Bill? (For Active and Selected Reserves Personnel)
The Montgomery GI Bill – “Selected Reserve program (MGIB-SR),” is the 1st education assistance program that doesn't require service for Active Duty in any of the five branches in the Armed Forces.
The Montgomery GI Bill – “Selected Reserve (MGIB - SR),” is an education-based assistance program ratified by Congress to promote the finest men and women registered in the Selected Reserve of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard, along with the Army and Air National Guard. If you qualify, you can use the “MGIB-SR” regarding any degree programs, certificate, or related curriculums, joint training, independent study programs, apprenticeship/on-the-job training, along with vocational flight training programs. Also, refresher and deficiency training courses may be applicable. Under the MGIB-SR, you may acquire up to 36 months of education advantages, with tuition disbursements sent directly from the VA to your educational institution.
Qualifications and Obligations
The VA implemented Montgomery GI Bill - Selected Reserve program is for Reserve personnel. If you are or were registered in the Reserves, the VA has made it easy to be eligible for the following benefits:
- You must obtain a six-year obligation for service in the Selected Reserve signed after the date of 6/30/85. If you hold officer status, you must have signed contract to serve six years in addition to your original obligation. For certain types of training, it is required to have a six-year obligation that begins after 9/30/90
- You must have completed your initial active duty for training (IADT)
- You have acquired a high school diploma or GED prior to completing (IADT)
- You were in good standing while serving in an active Selected Reserve unit.
Eligibility
You are eligible for the Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB), if you remained in your Selected Reserve (SR) for the durational 14 year eligibility period, you will acquire benefits. Eligibility may also pertain to having medical discharge from SR, due to a disability that was not caused by a misdemeanor. Your eligibility timeframe may have an extension if ordered to active duty in the future.
